Searching for a large format scanner?
If your in need of a wide format scanner, you are not alone. Artists, engineers, and a wide range of other professionals have been using these types of scanners for years.
For this reason, many copier companies have come out with their own large format scanner models. Cannon, Epson, HP, and many other companies currently have these types of scanners for sale.
While this is great because it gives us many options, it also makes things a bit confusing. Although all of the scanners are created to do the same thing, not all of them do it as well.
In addition to this, the term large format scanner means different things to different people. While engineers might be looking to do D and C size printing, the cartoonist may only be looking to do A3 printing.
The difference between an A3 scanner and one that can scan D size prints is huge. I’ve worked with all size scanners and have even used the fully loaded KIP.
I found that one of the best bargains in large size scanning was the Mustek. For less than $200 you can get a scanner that scans prints up to 11.7″ x 16.5″. The Mustek Scan Express A3 1200 Pro USB can do this in color at 9600 dpi. (to the uninitiated, dpi = dots per inch)
Another great thing about it is that it does not take long to warm up before the first use and does not require a lot of setup.
Unfortunately, for people that need to scan the extra half inch, there really isn’t anything in the bargain price range. However, even though you’ll be paying a lot more, you will be getting a lot more functionality.
I found that the Epson makes a great large format scanner that can scan more than 11×17. The Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner offers scans up to 12.2 by 17.2 inches. It has 48 bit depth color and can zoom up to 200%.
This 11×17 scanner will even accurately scan in graphite pencil sketches. The scanner requires even less pre scanning setup than the Mustek. It also runs very quietly when compared to the budget scanning options.
If your looking to get a large format scanner, I highly recommend you check out the Epson and Mustek models. In terms of quality and functionality, you won’t find anything better in their price range.
